Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson
Nancy Wilson was born 20th February 1937 in Chillicothe to Olden Wilson, an iron worker, and Lillian Ryan (a former housemaid). Nancy was the first of six children. Her father was a fan of music and loved to play records in the family. This was a major influence on her as a child. When she was young she was already able to establish the impression of who she was as well as the things she wanted to be. The church choir was instrumental in developing her talent. Following her win in a talent show on TV around the age of 15 years old, she began to regularly appear in Skyline Melodies, while still in highschool. At nightclubs, she began performing at the age of 15. Following her graduation from high school aged 17 Nancy matriculated for one year at Ohio's Central State College now Central State University before dropping out and becoming an accomplished performer. She recorded her first record with Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band in 1956. The group performed from 1956 until 1958. Nancy's initial Dot Records recording was made when she was a member of the Carolyn Club Big Band. Cannonball Adderley advised her that she needed to relocate to New York to further her career and she went to The Big Town at the end of 1959. She was commissioned to sing for The Blue Morocco Night Club in The Bronx, where Adderley's agent had seen her. In 1960, he enlisted her to Capitol Records. That same year she released her first single. Guess Who I Stopped Today. Capitol Records came out with five Nancy Wilson albums over a two-year period. Adderley encouraged her to shift away from R&B to the torch and jazz genres. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley's collaboration in 1962 helped to bring her to the forefront as well as her hit Tell Me the Truth was released in 1963. In the following year, she received an invitation to perform at the New York's Coconut Grove, the most prestigious night club in America.
