Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson

Nancy Wilson was born 20th February 1937 in Chillicothe to Olden Wilson, a ironworker and Lillian Ryan (a former housemaid). Nancy is the youngest of six siblings. Nancy was heavily influenced in her early years by the music her father was a fan of and played when she was at home. It was clear that she wanted to be a singer by the time she was 4 years old. She developed her talents by participating in the church choir. While still in high-school, she appeared regularly on Skyline Melodies. The singer began performing in nightclubs at the same age. Nancy graduated high school aged 17 and enrolled in Ohio's Central State College, now Central State University for a whole year. Then she dropped out to pursue a job as a professional musician. She recorded her first record with Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band in 1956 with whom she performed from 1956 until 1958. Nancy released her first album with Dot Records while in the band. Cannonball Aderley suggested that she relocate in New York so as to increase her chances of success. In 1959, Nancy moved in The Big Town. In just a few months, she was offered a gig singing in The Blue Morocco Night Club on Boston Road in The Bronx where Adderley's agent heard her voice and agreed to sign her. In 1960, he signed her to Capitol Records. That same year she released her first single. Guess Who You Saw Today. Capitol Records came out with five Nancy Wilson albums over a time span of 2 years. The first was focused on R&B and then, with Adderley's influence, she started to take on jazz. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley's collaboration in 1962 helped to propel her into the spotlight and her smash hit Tell Me the Truth was released in 1963. It led her to perform at New York's Coconut Grove the premier night club in America the following year and she quickly became a legend.
